Who are the popes and why did they have a big impact on the end of feudalism?

In the Middle Ages the main religion was Christianity (Catholic in 2010), and the popes are the ones that are "in charge of the church." And since most of Europe was Christian the pope was like the king, but not really. The popes also are in charge of where you go when you die and they talk to God for you. Like if you go against the church, and the pope knows about it then you can get in trouble. The worst of the punishments are that the pope can excommunicate you (that means you you can't go to church anymore because the pope is not allowing you to, and they believe that you would go to hell. They had a big impact on feudalism because during the Middle Ages the kings and the popes fought a lot.

What were the causes of the kings and pope's fights?

They fought for a lot of reasons like who should pick the bishops... They also fought because they want power over the other. One year the pope actually excommunicated the emperor, and months later the emperor came back to the church and begged the pope to bring him back to the church, and he waited there for 3 days and finally the pope said yes and he was back to the church.
I's stories like that, that started a fight between the pope and the king. Anyway back to the story- Over time they thought of a compromise for the bishop thing: the pope would choose the bishops, but those same bishops had to obey the king. This is the one of many fights (and compromises) that the pope and king had over power and who should do this, and who should do that.
